How do you handle the parts of life you simply cannot control? A job you are waiting to hear back on. A relationship that feels stuck. A prayer that seems to go unanswered. Most of us spend enormous energy trying to manage outcomes that are ultimately outside our hands. But Scripture offers a different way forward.
In 1 Thessalonians 3:11-13, the apostle Paul writes a short but powerful prayer for the church at Thessalonica. Three verses. Three requests. And a posture that challenges everything our culture tells us about control, love, and confidence in faith.
Paul prays three things. He asks God to direct his path back to the Thessalonians, even though he had been hindered and the road was blocked. He asks the Lord to cause their love to increase and overflow, not just toward fellow believers but toward every person around them, including those who persecuted them. And he asks God to establish their hearts blameless and holy in preparation for the return of Christ.
Each of these requests points to something we cannot manufacture on our own. We cannot force open doors. We cannot produce genuine, overflowing love through sheer willpower. And we cannot make ourselves holy through self-improvement. These are works that belong to God.
This is the process of sanctification. When you place your faith in Jesus Christ, God begins conforming you into the image of His Son. That work does not stop at salvation. It continues throughout your entire life, removing what no longer belongs, shifting your priorities, and growing fruit that you could not grow on your own.
The word "may" in Paul's prayer is significant. It is not a demand. It is not a claim. It is a humble, submitted request from someone who knows he is not in control and has decided that is okay, because the One who is in control is good, faithful, and deeply loving.
This message is for anyone who is tired of striving, anyone who has been holding something tightly that only God can direct, and anyone who wonders whether God is actually at work in their life. The answer is yes. And the evidence is already there if you know where to look.
